What it actually is
Amazonite is the blue-green variety of microcline, a potassium feldspar. The colour has been traced to traces of lead in the crystal structure, which is a satisfying answer to a question mineralogists argued about for a long time. The name is a misnomer: it was given in the eighteenth century after stones supposedly from the Amazon basin, where no deposit of it has ever been found. Mohs 6–6.5, with feldspar cleavage. Ours are cut as cubes rather than rounds, which shows the colour banding better than a sphere does.

Does amazonite come from the Amazon?
No. The name is an eighteenth-century mistake that stuck. Major sources today include Russia, Madagascar, Brazil and the United States.
Why cubes and not round beads?
Cube beads show the streaky white-and-green banding across a flat face, which a round bead curves away from.
