Do I need a reading before booking a puja?

Why anyone does this at all

If you've never had a remedy performed, the honest starting point is that none of this makes sense until you know what a chart is supposed to be. So, briefly, and in the tradition's own terms.

Jyotish reads a birth chart as a map of the sky at the moment you were born, divided into twelve houses, with the nine grahas sitting somewhere in it. Each graha is held to govern certain areas of a life and to carry a certain character. Over your lifetime you pass through periods, the dashas, each one belonging to one graha, and the tradition holds that the graha whose period you're in is the one whose placement in your chart matters most right now.

A remedy is what the tradition prescribes when a reader judges a particular graha to be badly placed, or weak, or running a period that a chart handles poorly. The idea, in the tradition, is not that you're being rescued from something. It's that a graha is addressed: its mantra recited the prescribed number of times, on the weekday that belongs to it, with the offerings and grains traditionally associated with it, in your name. That address is the whole content of the rite. Everything on this page is a form of it.

Whether any of that produces an effect in your life is a question we don't answer, and we would be suspicious of anyone who does. What we can tell you is that this is a coherent, very old system with its own internal logic, that the logic is what determines which rite you're offered and on which day, and that a reader who can't explain that logic to you in plain language isn't reading your chart.

What you actually get for the money

Setting the tradition aside for a moment, here is the material answer, because it's the one you can verify.

An hour or a morning of a practitioner's work, performed on a date fixed by the rite rather than by our calendar, with the samagri listed to you in writing beforehand.
Your name and gotra spoken at the sankalp, which is the part that makes it yours rather than a group rite with a list read out at the start.
The whole sitting on video, unedited, sent the same evening. You can count the mantras. You can see the practitioner's face. Most sellers will not give you this, and the reason they will not is worth thinking about.
Something physical, for three of the four: ash and prasad from the havan, the stone back in your hand after the abhimantran, a written list of what was performed for the navagraha.

That's the deal. If a reading tells you no remedy is indicated, the honest outcome is that you spend nothing here and we have still done our job.

What a remedy actually is

In Indian astrology a remedy, an upay, is an action, not a purchase. Someone reads a chart, identifies a graha that's prominent in it, and prescribes something to be done: a mantra counted a set number of times, an offering made on a particular weekday, a fast, a donation, a stone worn against the skin. The rite is the object. There's no product that arrives in a box and does the work for you.

What we sell is the doing of it, properly, by someone who will put their face on the recording. That's a narrow thing to sell and we would rather describe it narrowly than dress it up.

How to tell which one applies to you

Honestly: from a reading, not from this page. Every rite below is addressed to something specific in a specific chart, and there's no way to work out which one from your birth month or your rashi alone. Sites that let you pick a puja from a dropdown are selling you the dropdown.

So the order is: talk to a reader first. If your chart calls for a remedy, they will name it and tell you why. If it doesn't, they will tell you that too, and we will not offer you a different one to keep the conversation going. A reading costs a fraction of any rite on this page, and it's the only part that decides anything.

What “performed on your behalf” means

It means a practitioner performs the rite here, in Kanpur, with your name and gotra spoken aloud at the sankalp, and films the whole sitting for you. You don't attend. You don't have to take a day off, travel, or arrange anything.

Three things follow from that, and they're the whole reason to choose one seller over another:

Your name is in it. Sankalp is where a rite becomes yours rather than a group one with a list of strangers read out at the start. Ask any seller whether your sankalp is individual. Many aren't.
You get the unedited sitting. The whole thing, one take, sent the same evening, not a thirty-second clip cut to music, and not a photograph of an altar that could be from any day of any year.
You're told who and where beforehand. The practitioner and the temple are named to you in writing before you pay, and they're visible on the recording.

What it costs

Prices are on the cards above and there's one price per rite, all inclusive. Samagri, the practitioner’s dakshina and the recording are inside it. There's no separate charge revealed later, no urgency tier, and no version that costs more because your chart is described as severe. The samagri list goes to you in writing before the day, so you can see what the money bought.

If a rite isn't the right thing for you, the cheapest correct answer is a reading and nothing else. We would rather sell you that.

Questions people ask before booking

Does an online puja count?

A rite performed by a practitioner on your behalf, with your sankalp, is a form that predates the internet by a long way: it's what happens whenever someone has a puja done at a temple they can't attend. The internet part is only how you found the practitioner and how you receive the recording. What matters is whether it was actually performed, individually, by whom, and whether you can see it.
