What it actually is
Aventurine is not a single mineral but a quartzite, a rock of interlocking quartz grains, carrying flakes of fuchsite, a chromium-bearing mica. Those flakes catch the light and produce aventurescence, the low glitter you see when you turn a bead. The green comes from the chromium in the mica, not from the quartz. India is the principal world source: most green aventurine in the trade is mined in Karnataka. Mohs 7.

Green aventurine appears in the common uparatna lists for Budh (Mercury), whose principal stone is panna (emerald), alongside peridot and green onyx. Which stone applies to you, if any, comes from a chart.

Is aventurine a real stone or glass?
Real rock. Confusingly there is a manufactured glass called goldstone or aventurine glass, which is a different thing entirely; our beads are natural quartzite and the certificate names the material.
Is it a substitute for panna?
It is one of the stones commonly named as an uparatna for Budh. That is a statement about the tradition, not a prescription for you.
