Who picks this one
Pick this one if you want to be able to watch something happen. Turn a bead under a lamp and a blue sheen crosses it and vanishes. This is the one to choose if you are buying a bracelet as a piece of jewellery first and everything else second. Handle it more carefully than the quartz ones: the material cleaves, and a hard knock will chip a bead rather than scuff it.
What it actually is
Here is the thing a seller usually leaves out. “Rainbow moonstone” is a trade name, and the material is white labradorite, a plagioclase feldspar, rather than the orthoclase feldspar that gemmology calls true moonstone. The blue flash comes from light scattering off microscopic layers inside the stone, an effect called adularescence, and in the rainbow material it can throw other colours with it. It is a beautiful stone, correctly described. Mohs 6–6.5, and feldspars have cleavage, so it chips more easily than quartz. India and Sri Lanka are the main sources.
Where it sits in the tradition
Moonstone (chandrakant) is the stone named in the classical lists as the uparatna for moti, the pearl, which belongs to Chandra. That naming refers to moonstone in the broad sense as it is used in the Indian trade.

Is rainbow moonstone real moonstone?
It is white labradorite sold under a trade name. Gemmologically, true moonstone is orthoclase. We say so rather than let the name do the work, and the certificate names the material.
Why is it more expensive than the quartz bracelets?
Better rough with a strong flash is scarcer, and the material is softer and cleaves, so more is lost in cutting.
